The whole reason for the season

In Rovaniemi, the forecast is the itinerary.

Nobody sells you the lights. They sell you a driver who will chase a hole in the cloud for four hours, and increasingly a refund if he does not find one. These are the three most-taken aurora nights in Rovaniemi.

Pick your night

Three ways to spend a clear night in Rovaniemi.

Same sky, three completely different evenings. The chase covers ground, the photo night comes home with proof, and the warm one puts you in water while you wait.

The chase

A van, a guide and unlimited mileage

3–5 hours· small groups· money back if nothing shows

The guide reads the cloud map, picks a direction and drives until the sky opens — sometimes twenty minutes out of town, sometimes a hundred kilometres. Campfire and hot berry juice while you wait.

The photo night

Someone else works the camera

3–4 hours· photos included· tripods provided

Phone cameras have got good enough to see the aurora and still bad enough to ruin it. On these nights a photographer handles the long exposures and sends the files afterwards, so you can just stand there.

The warm one

Sauna, hot tub, and the sky above it

3–4 hours· dinner on most· towels and suits included

Waiting for the lights is mostly standing still in minus twenty. The Finnish answer is to wait from inside a lakeside sauna, then cool off in a hole cut through the ice and look up.

Start with the big ones

The days people fly to Rovaniemi for.

The lights, the animals, the machines and the one village that put this town on every Christmas list. Six decisions that shape most Rovaniemi trips, and the best way to book each.

The animals

Huskies pull. Reindeer stroll. Rovaniemi sells both, and they are not the same afternoon.

A husky safari is loud, fast and cold on the face — you stand on the runners of your own sled and you brake with your foot. A reindeer farm is quiet: a herder in a wool coat, a lasso demonstration, coffee by the fire and a walk-pace sleigh through the trees. Families with small children usually want the second. Book both if you can; do not book them on the same day.

Santa Claus Village

The Arctic Circle runs straight through the car park.

Eight kilometres north of Rovaniemi the latitude line is painted across the ground, and a village has grown up around it: Santa's office, a post office that answers letters, huskies and reindeer at the back, and an ice hotel in season. Entry costs nothing. Everything worth queueing for does.

Euros in the cold

Lapland is expensive. Here is where the money actually goes.

Every tour on the site, sorted by what it costs. There is no cheap week in Rovaniemi, but there is a cheap way to have the same day — and the gap between the two is usually the transfer and the group size.

Under $100
49 tours

Entry tickets, farm visits, short snowmobile spins and the ice-fishing hour. The honest way into a Lapland day when the week is already costing enough.

$100–200
335 tours

The standard Rovaniemi evening: an aurora hunt with a campfire, a husky safari with a BBQ, a snowmobile safari that ends at a frozen lake with a rod in your hand.

$200 and up
195 tours

Private guides, combination days and the once-a-trip things — a glass igloo dinner, a long self-drive husky trail, a night in a room built out of snow.

When to come

Rovaniemi keeps two seasons, and the famous one is the dark half.

Aurora needs a clear sky and a dark one, and from late autumn to early spring Rovaniemi has darkness to spare — snow on the ground, lakes thick enough to walk on, everything on this site running at once. Then around midsummer the sun stops setting for roughly a month, the snow goes, and the same forests turn into hiking, paddling and midnight-sun country. Two different holidays at the same coordinates.

Only on the Arctic Circle

Three things you can only do because this is Rovaniemi.

Snow and huskies exist in a lot of places. A post office on the Arctic Circle, a mountain you are allowed to dig gemstones out of, and a lake you float on in a survival suit do not.

Latitude 66°33′

The Village on the Line

The Arctic Circle is not a place, it is a number — the latitude above which the sun manages a full day without rising or setting. Rovaniemi built a village on it. There is a line painted across the ground, a post office with its own postmark that answers letters from children all over the world, and a certificate at the end if you want one. It is unashamedly a tourist thing, and it is also genuinely the Arctic Circle.

Bring a glove

The Mine You Dig Yourself

On a fell in the Pyhä-Luosto national park there is a working amethyst mine, and the tour ends with you on your knees in the gravel with a hand tool. What you find, you keep — one stone, as long as it fits in your fist. It is a long way out of Rovaniemi and it is the only stop on this site where you come home with a rock in your pocket.

Minus twenty, in water

The Float on a Frozen Lake

A hole is cut into a metre of lake ice, you are zipped into a dry survival suit that traps a layer of air, and then you lie back in the water and drift. You do not get cold; that is the whole trick of the suit. Done in the daytime it is a strange, weightless hour. Done at night with the aurora out, it is the photograph everybody comes home with.

December books out by autumn

Book these before you fly to Lapland.

Most of Rovaniemi can be arranged from your hotel the night before, once you have seen the forecast. These cannot. They run on small numbers, one sitting a night, or a season that is shorter than the winter around it.

  1. 01Tour to Santa Claus Village with Hotel pick upDecember is the whole point and the whole problem — the Christmas weeks fill long before the flights do.
  2. 02PRIVATE Party dinner in a Glass Igloo Under Northern LightsA handful of igloos and one sitting a night. The aurora months go first, and they go early.
  3. 03Drive Your Own Husky Team (6–10 km) & BBQA kennel can only run so many teams in a day, and the self-drive sleds are the first slots to disappear.
  4. 04Guided Ice Climbing Activity in PyhäTiny roped groups on frozen waterfalls, led by guides who only run when the ice is right. It is the shortest season on the site.
  5. 05Snow Hotel Tour and Ice Restaurant DinnerThe whole building is rebuilt from scratch every winter and melts every spring. There are only so many rooms, and only so many months.
